90-Day Programme for Traumatised or Complex Horses
Tailored support for horses who are traumatised, fearful, unhandled, or showing complex behaviours such as aggression, phobias or separation anxiety.
The Traumatised & Complex Horse 90-Day Programme
Living with a traumatised or complex horse can be overwhelming. It’s stressful, frustrating and sometimes even frightening when your horse reacts unpredictably — whether they are too afraid to wear a headcollar, becoming anxious when handled, or struggling to cope with their environment. It doesn’t have to stay this way.
Through my 90 Day Traumatised and Complex Horse Programme, I’ll guide you and your horse step by step with proven approaches including consent based care and trauma-informed principles. Together, we’ll focus on helping your horse feel calmer, safer and more able to engage with the world around them.
Everything is taken at your horse’s pace, with support for you every step of the way.
Just imagine a future where your horse approaches their world with trust and curiosity instead of fear — and where you feel more confident, supported and in control. With the 90 Day Programme, that future is within reach.
This is where science, safety and compassion meet, for stronger relationships.
How it Works:
Whether your horse has faced trauma, struggles with handling, or finds the world overwhelming through fear, separation anxiety or other behaviour challenges, this programme provides structured, compassionate support.
Change takes time — and this approach allows the space to give your horse time.
Step 1:
Comprehensive Assessment
Vet referral required before behaviour work begins (to rule out pain or illness contributing to behaviour).
Full history taken, getting to know you and your horse.
A tailored support plan created around your horse’s needs and your aims for a calmer future.
Bespoke to you and your horse — always at your and their pace
Step 2:
Intensive Support (First Month)
Around 2 sessions per week (approx. 2 hours each) — adjusted if needed to suit your circumstances.
Direct work with your horse where appropriate.
Video feedback + session notes.
WhatsApp support between sessions.
Any unused sessions roll over for up to 3 months
Step 3:
Ongoing Progress (Months 2 & 3)
Session frequency tapers as your horse builds confidence.
Regular updates to the support plan.
Liaison with your vet or other professionals as required.
Any unused sessions roll over for up to 3 months
Step 4:
Continuing Care (90 Days +)
No two horses are the same — some will need extra time and support beyond the first 90 days.
That’s why I offer flexible, affordable ways to continue — with unused sessions rolling over into the next month so nothing is wasted.
“My rescue pony has really begun to feel safe”
"My rescue pony who is elderly and partially sighted is really starting to feel safe in her physical environment as well as growing in confidence with people. Going at her pace and offering choice has supported her sense of safety"

Betty is a rescue cob, who was found pregnant in a field of other horses..She developed sudden onset changes in her behaviour not long after moving to a new yard with her caregiver. Prior to this she had learnt a range of different cues with positive reinforcement.
These dramatic changes included extreme defensive and aggressive behaviours towards people including biting, lunging and kicking out. Her caregiver immediately noticed something was wrong and contacted her vet.
On examination Betty was found to have Grade 2 ulcers, liver disease from past neglect and severe sweet itch. These complex medical issues exacerbated her fear and stress levels making her difficult and unsafe to handle.both in and out of the field even after treatment and on-going management. These behaviours were both worrying and frightening for her caregiver.
To ensure everyone’s’ safety Betty was handled behind a barrier and lured from one space to another to ensure everyone was safe for two months. As a result her owner, Alison reached out for professional help feeling desperate and worried. She booked Betty on to my Initial 90 Day Traumatised and Complex Horse Programme.
Betty’s journey from fear to trust
Over the course of the first few months, Betty received regular intensive support sessions to rebuild trust that focused on creating safe ways for her to interact using protected contact on- going observations of her behaviour and responses to explore what helped her feel safe. These included creating predictable patterns so Betty knew what to expect and always responding to any signs of tension.
We also introduced enrichment to boost her mood and curiosity. Through consent-based techniques , tailored enrichment and consistent guidance offered to everyone on the yard.
Betty gradually improved growing her social circle with people and building her sense of safety with handling. Alison learned clear communication strategies and gained a deeper understanding of Bettys’ needs.
“With Jessie’s support who really took the time to build a relationship with Betty. She is now so much calmer and able to better cope with handling and more able to manage life’s’ ups and downs including changes to her physical and social environment. She is able to ask for scratches and seeks out interactions with me and other people..”

Whilst I cannot guarantee specific results, as with severe trauma or complex cases full resolution is not always realistic. However, regardless of outcome I will do my best to create realistic adaptations for your horse to have the best quality of life possible.
. Unfortunately there are no full guarantees with behaviour as many factors are involved but fo the vast majority of more straight-forward cases improvement and positive change is possible.
I can’t wait to give you the support and guidance you need, to help you and your horse share best life possible together.

I use animal-led and consent-based approaches which are trauma-sensitive. and where appropriate scent work (for horses) focusing on empowering your horse. Where appropriate more structured positive reinforcement based training. may be incorporated. However, for traumatised horses the priority is supporting them to return to their baseline, reduce stress and create safety.. The aim is to restore emotional and physical balance through meeting individual and species-specific needs.
I do not use any flooding but instead incorporate gentle systematic desensitisation and titration and pendulation to support safety and curosity.. This approach ensures a safe and supportive environment for your horse by gradually building trust at their pace. I work closely with your vet and other professionals to ensure your horse is supported in a holistic way.
